We're Diverse - My Students Need To Find Themselves In Books
My students need books with culturally diverse characters such as Peter's Chari, Carolos and the Cornfield, and Estrellilta De Oro. Students who can identify with characters are more likely to enjoy reading books.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students' parents come from different countries of Central America and Africa. Some of my students have not yet discovered books that they enjoy reading because they cannot identify themselves with the characters in the story. That's why we need materials with more culturally diverse characters.
I have the privilege to teach the most adorable 4th and 5th graders you will ever meet.
Yes, I love them to pieces. My English Language Learners are responsible, respectful, and always ready to learn. Despite the challenges they often face at home or in their communities, my students are eager to learn and one day go to college.
I'm proud to say that our school forms part of the public education system of one of our nation's Midwestern states. It is a Title I school and the majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Providing them with the basic necessities is great, but it's not enough. These smart kids deserve so much more.
My Project
My students need books with culturally diverse characters such as Peter's Chair, Carlos and the Cornfield, and Estrellita De Oro. Students who can identify with characters are more likely to enjoy reading books. The books that I'm requesting through this project will enrich our classroom library. My students will be able to engage with them during independent reading time or check them out and read them at home with their parents.
The 30 copies of "Who Was Martin Luther King, Jr.?" will constitute the highlight of our reading practice during Black History Month. Since I place great importance on social justice issues, this text will be perfect to initiate discussions about injustices.
I hope that my students will truly enjoy reading books once they're able to identify themselves with the characters.
It's hard to look into all these beautiful brown-eyed students with dark brown or black hair and then introduce yet another story with white, blue-eyed characters. Let's show them that their stories are just as important!!
