Hi there! Do you want to help to instill a lifelong love of the arts in middle school girls? Starting a photography program at our school will: connect girls with cutting edge digital tools for art making in the 21st Century and help spark their artistic passions!
I teach multiple subjects to 69 bright and talented middle school girls in a high need area of New York City.
Most of my students receive free or reduced lunch and arrive so eager to learn every day. Our school is a very small, urban all-girls charter school and we have very little funding for extra-curricular activities or for elective courses. The curriculum at our school is highly rigorous which is wonderful, but can be taxing on some girls who particularly shine in areas other than ELA, math, or science. Our girls only have art class once weekly for 45 minutes and many are desperate for more time to express and build their artistic capabilities. In addition to living in the "inner city", many of my students are identified as having learning disabilities, ADHD, or emotional disabilities, which they persevere through each and every day on top of everything else!
Through the generosity of a wonderful donor, we were able to procure 6 brand new digital cameras to begin a photography course. The supplies we are now requesting will be the foundation for what is on it's way to becoming the new photography program at our school. The photograph printer will allow our girls to have actual copies of the photos taken for several different projects that include self-reflection and vivid city imagery. The notebooks will provide the girls with a safe space to store their work, write down newly acquired information, and keep a running log of how their skills as a photographer are growing and how having photography in their lives is impacting them. The projects these students will work on involve their emotions, but they also require their understanding of how the technology works to edit the picture; a skill they will likely use in the future and potentially as a career.
By helping to support our school with this donation, you are making a difference not only this year for several dozen students, but also many more in the years to come.
This project is so important because it will provide our girls with a well-rounded education and will enable them to build upon strengths in multiple areas. Photography will provide a girl who might not otherwise be invested in school and feel like giving up with an artistic outlet to shine light on her strengths.
