Mrs. Wheeler from Morganton NC is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

We're Bringing Reading Back!

My students need these high-interest YA books for independent reading! They selected some of their favorite authors like Jeff Zentner, Rick Riordan, John Hart, Laurie Halse Anderson, and Christopher Paolini.

My Students

One of the most amazing things about our middle college high school program is the diversity of the student population and our students' drive to succeed! Our unique program allows students to be concurrently enrolled in community college courses while earning their high school diploma. Our amazing students are taking high school classes, college classes, volunteering in the community, and often working in the public sector.

Even though many of our students come from challenging circumstances, they strive to excel and love to learn!

Many of our students and their families make significant sacrifices to attend our program. Even though they are not required to pay tuition for their college classes, they have the added burden of transportation, college textbook expenses, and reduced availability to work due to heavy course loads. However, these students are driven to succeed! Most of them are first-generation college students who recognize that education and hard work provide the framework needed for a successful and productive future. They are willing to do what it takes to achieve their goals!

My Project

As many studies have shown, students in high school tend to read less and less for enjoyment as the demands of jobs, extracurricular activities, and required academic reading consume the bulk of their time. After reading inspiring books like Donalyn Miller's "The Book Whisperer" and Penny Kittle's "Book Love", I was determined to make a change in my classroom practice to reignite the passion and love of literature that many of my students experienced as younger students.

My amazing group of high school juniors and seniors has rediscovered the joy and relaxation of independent reading!

They are making their way through our classroom library at a record pace, so they helped generate this list of books they would like to add to our library.

This list of titles represents the diverse interests of these incredible young men and women and their quest for knowledge. While some books like "Ghost Boys" and "Girl in Pieces" deal with timely and relevant topics, other books such as the "Inheritance" series and "9 from the Nine Worlds" offer an escape from modern turmoil into a fantasy land free from cares. "The Astonishing Color of After" and "The Way I Used To Be" resonate with messages of hope amidst trials and despair. As William Nicholson said, "We read to know that we are not alone." Please consider helping us add these new "book friends" to our classroom family.
