Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Wouldn't it be great to go through school without the trepidation of writing? In my first grade classroom, I work to instill a passion for writing as I experience it. Many of my struggling first graders, in this urban New Jersey school district, come from homes where they do not observe family members writing. Some of them receive free or reduced lunch and come from homes where the parents are not literate.
It has been my experience that our students are unable to write for a variety of purposes. They are naturally curious and, when given the opportunity, will write whatever they can! I encourage writing, of any genre, on a regular basis. However, with budget constraints in my district, I am limited to purchasing supplies that are absolutely necessary.
To create a writing center that is inviting, I need a mix of materials. These materials include pencils, a sharpener, Crayola markers, envelopes, rubber stamps, stickers, and an assortment of paper.
By providing these materials, my students will be able to explore and engage in the process of writing in a non-threatening way. They will be able to write stories, practice their newly learned words, make journals to use, and write letters to classmates and family members. The possibilities are endless!
Your generosity would supply our writing center with materials that would allow my first graders the opportunity to take risks and explore writing for a variety of purposes. Your help would make such a difference in our classroom!
