This project is fully funded

My goal this year is for my students to experience poetry, and begin to love it. I would like for my students to hear, read, and write many different forms of poetry. I plan to include poems as a focal point of my teaching this year. This will give all of my students the time to become familiar with different styles of poetry, as well as different poets. I would like my students to read poems, and describe the images that certain words or phrases bring to their minds. I want them to read these poems to one another, and study their favorite poets. I would like for them to illustrate what they see when they read their poems, and write responses to the poems. Finally, I want them to become comfortable enough with poetry to create their own poems. I teach reading, writing, math, science and social studies in a fifth grade classroom in the Chicago Public School system. My class has 27 students, from diverse economic classes, races, and countries. My class includes all ability levels, second language learners, and students with special learning needs. In order to properly make poetry a regular part of our curriculum I would like poetry books with poems appropriate for 10 year-old students. I would like highlighting tape so that students can highlight words and phrases that bring images to their minds without writing in the books. I would like a magnetic poetry kids kit, so that students can kinesthetically form their own poems before putting them on paper. In addition I would like to purchase rhyming dictionaries and thesauruses to aid all of my students in creating their own poetry. I would like a book of idioms to assist my second language learners in interpreting poetry as well as writing it. Finally I would like two books with lessons designed to aid my students in learning how to write different forms of poetry. All 27 of my students will participate in this project. This project will be exciting and enjoyable for my class. It is designed with all of my students in mind. With your help, my class will be on their way to appreciating poetry.
