This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our teens are growing up too fast! They come from Washington Heights and the Bronx. A classroom can be their escape from home. Not just to learn academics, but to also connect with their community of peers and (teachers) who support them. By creating a welcoming vibe in the Art Classroom, students are more inclined to enjoy their learning and improve their connection to school and extra-curricular activities. Hopefully, they can discover coping mechanisms and means of escape through Art Therapy techniques like bracelet making, painting, drawing, and playing.

Treating them like humans FIRST and students with academic responsibilities SECOND... This is what helps me build the connection and trust our kids need to survive in school, and later on in society.

Art class can be intimidating and anxiety-inducing for students who strive for perfection and fear failure, so my approach to art and wellness will hopefully bridge those fears and turn them into bundles of growth! Having plants and bean bag chairs allows for flexible seating to meet their needs for the day. Sometimes you just want to plop on a beanbag chair while sketching and listening to music.
