This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach at a majority-low-income public high school in Chicago, where 98% of our students are students of color. Many are English learners, newcomers, migrants, or students with IEPs. Despite the challenges they face, my students are passionate, thoughtful, and eager to engage in their lessons.

Throughout the year, my students and I have been having meaningful conversations around mental health, technology, and connection.

We've talked about how while people are technically more connected than ever before in human history, there has been a marked increase in people's experiences with anxiety, depression, and general mental health matters.

While technology has--without a doubt--improved many aspects of modern life, it cannot be denied that social media and other addictive apps often leave people feeling lonely and isolated. By taking my students outside, I hope to encourage them to reflect on the power of choice, movement, physical activity, and connection.

We will be engaging in a short end-of-year unit that provides students with the time and space to view their growth from a holistic point of view. Combining psycho-education, mindfulness, movement, and self-reflection, I am hopeful that this unit affords students a moment to further their self-discovery and self-care.

One of the things I would like my students to explore is the impact the outdoors has on their moods. We will do some mood tracking and reflecting before and after an outdoor class session. We will also discuss the difference in mood between sessions in which students are physically active (hence the supplies!) and sessions when students are sedentary.

Of course, all students are different, and I expect that their experiences with this experiment will be, too!
