My Project

The high school students at my school often need a safe place to calm down, chill out and gain the courage to go back to class. This project will provide them the tools and positive environment that they need. The pandemic has been difficult on everyone in different ways. Some of my students and even my colleagues get overwhelmed with emotions during the school day and need to take a break. Imagine if they could walk down the hall to a classroom that has been transformed into a Wellness Cent. Soft lighting, soothing music, relaxing smells, and a comfy place to sit while using hands-on tools to help them regain their composure.

When we teach children that their feelings are normal and how to cope with them in a healthy way, we give them a gift that they can use for a lifetime.

With your help, I will be able to teach my students healthy coping strategies and also how to improve academically. Students will be able to come into my classroom with soothing blue light covers that smells of relaxing lavender, sit on the exercise ball and select from a hands on activity such as playing with play-doh, coloring a mandala or gazing at a colorful water timer. Once they have calmed down, we can use the posters around the room to identify their feelings, a strategy to practice and a positive affirmation or growth mindset phrase. By working with students on managing their emotions and setting goals to prevent being overwhelmed, I will help their daily attendance and focus in class increase. Students who are at school and able to focus can make huge gains in the learning that they lost during the pandemic. Please donate to allow me to create this safe space.
