My Students

I teach in a Title I school where 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students come from a low-income population and many don't have the opportunity to practice problem solving skills or to explore STEM-related activities . Most of them don't have a supply of materials at home to inspire their creativity.

The children in my class love coming to school and having new experiences!

They are eager to learn and get so excited when they can be successful!

I serve a transient population, including students from military as well as homeless and displaced families. Our students often come to us with gaps in their education and many need extra support to reach grade-level standards.

My Project

The materials I'm requesting for my class will allow my students to practice and improve their problem-solving skills through STEM/STEAM based activities. The I Can Build It! Architecture Set will let them explore home-building. They won't just be stacking blocks together but will begin by following pre-printed plans and exploring the reasons why homes are built the way they are. Then they'll have the chance to create their own plans and try them out to see if their houses meet the criteria for safe and sturdy buildings.

With the Design and Play STEAM Cars Kit, each student will get to build his own balloon-powered car!

Every car will have be based on the same basic principles, but each child will be able to decide how to put his car together to maximize speed and distance. They'll test their cars, then make changes to improve performance before re-testing them.

Based on an old familiar tale, the Gingerbread Man Problem Solving STEM Kit will take the children through the tale and present them with the problems the Gingerbread Man comes up against. They will use the materials provided to problem-solve and test out their ideas.

These activities will provide opportunities for collaboration among students and will spur them to think in new ways and to understand that there is more than one way to solve problems. They will be able to compare their solutions and test their ideas to see what works and what doesn't.

Extended activities will include literacy, as students learn to talk about their experiences and what worked or didn't work. They will make predictions about how they might do things differently or better, and will write about their experiences, ideas, and plans.
