Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Exciting News! The pilot year of our Writing Center at my urban middle school is up and running! Trained peer tutors are actively helping to coach students of all writing abilities in all content areas throughout the school year. The bad news? Our school budget only covers furniture and we will be starting from scratch to supply the writing coaches with the resources they need to make the conferences productive and also fun for the students being tutored. My student writing coaches and I worked together to figure out what tools they and their clients need to feel more productive encouraged and supported during tutoring sessions. This project is the result!
As we know, writing is difficult but so important, and having the supplies they need can stimulate production and creativity for both the writing coaches and the clients who come to the Writing Center to be tutored.
We want students to see the Writing Center as a special, professional, productive place where they will be motivated to visit to get the support they need to be successful. This project will help by providing whiteboard markers students can use to provide visual notes and feedback, post-its for students to take helpful notes and feedback back to their classes, highlighters to help with annotation and organization, and stickers and pops to reward kids for their engagement and hard work in the center.
I want my writing coaches to have all of the supplies that they need to conduct their conferences with enthusiasm and confidence so that the students we help can be more successful and motivated.
