"We Need A Camcorder: A Short Play" -FADE IN- SCENE: An urban classroom with an almost stereotypical amount of diversity. Students from various races, religions, ethnicity, and socio-economic status provide feedback to a group that just presented their student-created play to the class. The play is a culmination of student work where they created a historically accurate depiction of Medieval Life that incorporates the storytelling and literary devices learned in this combined Language Arts/Social Studies class. STUDENT ONE: Man that was great. I loved the way you used foreshadowing! STUDENT TWO: Yeah, and your costumes are really well done. You must have done a lot of research into what Medieval people wore. STUDENT THREE: Thanks. It was fun to do and perform. I sure wish we could see our own performance. STUDENT FOUR: Yes, it would be amazing to see ourselves perform and then we could really provide our own self-assessment and evaluate how well we did. STUDENT THREE: Or better yet, since we learned about mood and tone it would be cool if we could record and edit our play as a short film. STUDENT ONE: Yeah, you could add special effects, music, and lighting to help enhance our understanding of devices and how an author would use them to develop the plot. STUDENT TWO: That would be amazing! And we could put captions and title pages with additional historical facts. TEACHER: Well students. You certainly have some great ideas. I think there is a way we could make all of these a reality. STUDENTS: Really! Wow! How? For Real? TEACHER: Yes, my brilliant young scholars. We could post a request on the wonderful website "Donor's Choose" and then some incredible, kind, and generous person would see how much our learning and achievement could be enhanced if they helped us get a digital camcorder. STUDENT ONE: Someone would really do that? STUDENT TWO: People really believe in education enough to support strangers? TEACHER: Yes, my young adults who are building self-confidence and academic skills: people really believe in you and your potential. (The Teacher and students go to the computer and post a request on the Donor's Choose Website.) STUDENT ONE: Do you think this will work? STUDENT TWO: I know it will, who could say no to students as great as us? ALL: HOORAY FOR THE DONOR'S THAT ARE GOING TO CHOOSE US! HOORAY! (The students dance for joy. Already, with their hearts filled with hope, they seem to be even more excited about learning and creating projects that are fun and educational. The teacher smiles broadly.) -FADE OUT-
