Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is an urban public high school. Along with the usual teenage interests, our students have a unique perspective on music and art, as they are growing up near creative centers in beach cities and Hollywood. Many of our students study piano outside of school, so providing support is an important part of encouraging students' extracurricular pursuits.
Developing individual interests, choosing music of personal interest to study, and joining together to play music with and for friends are important steps in developing a lifelong enriching music hobby.
Classes and adult-organized activities are an integral component of education, but student-organized activities are also crucial. When we are allowed and encouraged to develop our own creative approaches to developing ourselves, we learn in different ways and think about our educations differently.
My Project
The keyboard is the major component of this project. We have an organ and piano-size keyboard in our Rock Band Club setup now, but the keys of this new keyboard have more of the feel of piano keys. It's good that we have a variety of keyboards for different purposes, but our piano students will benefit from being able to practice on an instrument more like a piano. The little guitar amp and pedals will allow us to further expand our setup and take better advantage of the instruments we have. The cables and bag will help keep instruments functioning and secure.
All students should have the opportunity to join with friends and make their own music.
It needn't be so rare for classrooms to have instruments. It takes some effort, but it's not impossible. Like many instructors, I spend my own money on classroom projects, and I bring in my own instruments to share with the Rock Band Club. Having even a little support really helps, and each little bit adds up. The gear requested in this project will allow more students to take advantage of our program.
