My students need USB flash drives to keep their classwork and college and careers materials organized.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When I applied for college, I had a file folder of applications, recommendations, and essays that must have weighed 5 pounds. It was a chore to keep it together, let alone quickly find what was in it. Today, staying organized is even more of a challenge for my students.
My students are all recent immigrants who are learning English as a second or third language.
Our school represents over a dozen languages and more than 20 countries. They are expected to complete high school in the same amount of time as native speakers and with the same requirements. To meet this challenge, every teacher in our school teaches English in the context of their subject area. I teach biology. Because we are also a small school, each teacher has the added role of being an an adviser for 12-15 students. In Advisory class we help students address social issues, but also help them navigate their preparation for college and careers.
My Project
This year I am requesting a USB flash drive for each student on my team of 80-100 students so they can learn how to stay organized. Our semester portfolios will be easy to research with work saved on a USB drive, and easy to edit with each student saving drafts of their writing on their drive. Instead of endlessly searching for long ago discarded paperwork, we can search our flash drives for what we seek. Also, as my students approach junior and senior year, opportunities for internships, summer programs, and pre-college courses constantly arise. To help them respond quickly to deadlines and so students are not always reinventing the wheel, a USB drive will allow them to save a record of their classwork, applications, as well as an updated resume. When deadlines approach for projects, we will save lots of time that would have been spent searching for old essays, and instead spend our time reviewing what we've accomplished and polishing our credentials for the next great opportunity.
Organization sounds boring, but it is an essential life-skill.
In the tornado of paperwork that students generate in 4 years of high school and the college application process, it's easy to lose track. A simple USB drive is a tool that they will use throughout high school and many years to come. It is essential we practice using one now. Simple and inexpensive, it is beyond the means of many of my students. Help give them a leg up as they strive to succeed in their new home and new language.
