My Students

In third grade, we are at the beginning of our journey of discovering the wonderful world of literature. As Dr. Seuss has said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go!"

My classroom is made of students from various backgrounds.

Just this year, our school was given Title I status. This means that, even though we have a rigorous curriculum, several of our students arrive with a significant vocabulary deficit. The good news is that our parents chose to send their kids to a charter school, so they are committed to our high academic standards. We just expanded our building and are excited for all the new changes.

My Project

I am requesting 6 mp3 players, 6 headphones, and 1 charging station. Every quarter, we read at least one classic novel. About 1/3 of my students are struggling to read at grade level. Rather than excluding challenging classic novels from the curriculum, I would like to provide students with the ability to listen to audio books while following along with a copy of the book. That way, they can still access the wonderful stories and lessons in these wonderful novels. Most of our books are available in the public domain, so no further costs will be needed to acquire the audio books beyond the mp3 players, headphones, and charging station. This year, we plan to read The Wind in the Willows, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and a few others! We would even like to begin creating recordings for other books in our curriculum, such as non-fiction readers and even Math word problems!

We know that students' listening comprehension develops more quickly than reading comprehension.

I know that my struggling readers want to read higher level novels and the materials in this project will allow them to participate with the entire class. These students deserve to participate in the study of these classic novels because I know personally of the transformation that comes from developing a love of literature.
