My Students
I am so looking forward to setting up a supportive in-person academic environment for my incoming new second grade scholars this 2021-2022 school year! We have completed just about a year and half in virtual learning meaning that my incoming students started kindergarten in school in Fall 2019, went to virtual learning in March 2020, and continued with virtual learning through first grade until June 2021. While they have gaps in academic and social skills, each child has unique experiences to bring to class. They may be anxious or excited, ready or not to come to school. They need opportunities to move and sit comfortably, be able to color themselves, family, and friends exactly as they see them, and to practice mindfulness to increase their sense of well-being in a supportive environment when they begin their first month of school in a physical building.
My Project
My new second graders are now returning to in-person since kindergarten. Many of my students' families have experienced challenging times, such as losing family members to illness, reduced income, or housing issues. They each have unique socio-emotional needs, which inspired me to add additional tools and materials to the classroom to aid them: flexible seating mats, mindfulness materials, and multicultural crayons.
With this project, I would like to welcome my new students' diverse experience with learning and varied socio-emotional needs with kindness and respect by providing tools that are flexible to their needs in three different ways.
First, the flexible movable mat seatings will be there to support flexibility for instructional differentiation and social distancing inside the classroom. As I still have a classroom carpet for community circles and discussions, I will use flexible seating to space out students a little more as needed to follow social distancing guidelines.
Second, I would like to add some more mindfulness board books and breathing maze objects so any classmate who needs this can choose to regulate their emotions and take a break as each child build their unique stamina to focus, sit, or listen better. Mindfulness helps lower stress and anxiety, improve attention span, and increase sense of well-being. All these materials above will be easy to sanitize daily.
Third, a popular feature in my second grade class always been the weekly drawing art on Fridays, but we never used before multicultural crayons when students color to show diversity of people, objects, or animals. With these crayons, my students will be able to color what they want to color, rather than be limited to the school standard 16 crayon box color range, to make this even more engaging!
