My Students

Imagine joining a new school. Not just any new school, but a school in another country. A country where you don't speak the language. I have a few children in class this year that fit that category. These students need to learn the language as well as master new skills.

I work at a Title 1 school.

We have few resources and even fewer bilingual resources that students can use. For my English Language Learners, the only time that they are exposed to the English Language is when they are in school. This does not allow them to practice the language anywhere else. This puts them at a disadvantage for learning not just conversational English but the academic language as well.

My Project

These games and books that I am requesting will allow the students to emerge themselves into the new language with their old language side-by-side. The goal is to help them learn a few words at a time. They are overwhelmed each day by directions and projects in a language they do not understand. If they could learn a few words at a time that would allow them to better follow along in class because they will slowly be able to recognize more and more words that they see and hear each day. By playing these games each day along side students who fluently speak English, my new students. The books will also help build up their everyday vocabulary in the English language by allowing the students to see the new word alongside a picture representation of the word. These books also contain minimal Spanish to encourage students through this tough transition.

The school I teach at constantly has new students joining every month.

Many of these students do not fully speak the English Language. This project will make a difference in these particular student's lives the most as they will allow more students to succeed in a classroom setting no matter the obstacle.
