Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At our building this year, we have a 250% increase in the number of newcomers since the beginning of this academic year and we are expecting a continuous growth of this number. Our newcomers have brought joy, values, and new perspectives to our building. For this project, we are hoping to provide our new students with the equipment and activities that can help them strive in school, including after-school activities.
Many of our newcomer students are adjusting to not only the new education system and community, but also Iowa weather.
Thus, we are requesting classroom supplies, hygienic supplies, and sports equipment. Most of our newcomer students have always loved to watch and play sports. This year, we have used our sports program to encourage our newcomer students to participate more in school. We believe that participating more in school, and after-school activities will provide them the opportunities to make friends and practice their new language. However, many of our students did not have the proper equipment to do so, especially football cleats or even sports bras. This has hindered them from participating in our after-school activities. We hope that by getting rid of the obstacles and hindrances from participating in our sports program, our newcomers can showcase their amazing abilities outside the classrooms.
It is also common for newcomers to feel reluctant to ask for help. Thus, we are working towards providing our newcomer students with a welcome package that includes basic classroom supplies and hygienic supplies such as deodorant, chapstick, and body lotion that they can use in the classroom and on Iowa's cold winter days. We hope that by ensuring that our students get the opportunities they deserve, they will strive to unlock all of their superpowers and potential to be successful!
