Welcoming and Supporting Newcomers With Language and Vocabulary!
Help me give my students rhyming books and realia to support phonological awareness and language development, and a culturally relevant tablecloth and banner for our intervention space.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have the privilege and joy of teaching two Newcomer classes. My students have recently arrived to our school and the United States from North and Central America.
My students are so excited to share their assets and knowledge with us and they are very eager to learn English!
English has sounds not native to their primary language. In addition to learning vocabulary they are learning to create and express new sounds!
Learning English can be a fun, engaging and encouraging process through beautiful and relevant children's literature and hands on experiences. My Newcomer proposal is for a variety of culturally relevant children's books, letter/sound tubs, writing journals, erasers, and a tablecloth and banner for our small room. My students happily come to class because they know it is a space where they can take risks, grow and celebrate their new learning! Please support our newest students on campus!
