Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember reading that first book that helped you develop a love of reading? Do you remember those integrated art lessons during math or history class?
My students are from one of the poorest and most violent cities in the country.
Every day they strive to broaden their horizons and reach for the stars. For many, school is the only safe haven they know. I work to teach them that there is a bigger world out there than the one they see every day, that they matter, and that they will always have a safe place to explore the world around them in our classroom.
My Project
We just opened up a life skills program here at Woodrow Wilson for our most needy students. Many of these kids have Cognitive Disabilities, Autism and Physical Disabilities that prevent them from being able to function independently within the greater community. We need the technology that they will be working with in the work place.
Our program intends to teach these kids the adaptive and functional skills to integrate into the larger community and to lead productive and fulfilling lives where they are contributing to society.
Our life skills program at Wilson is brand new. We have established a community based instructional program where students work outside in the community developing adaptive skills so that they can function independently within the community. They learn how to take public transportation, budget their money, juniors and seniors go out to work twice a week and receive pay checks. The program promotes inclusion regardless of the students’ disabilities.
Our goal is to open a room which has already be designated as a life skills room. The kids can learn to cook, do laundry and shop for themselves. The long term goal is to prepare our kids for independent lives outside of the school. After we arm them with the adaptive and functional skills to participate as productive citizens within the community, we have several local agencies that help support our kids' transition to adulthood. By working with the students and their families to provide housing, we can provide these students with job training opportunities. That's why we need the cash register to be able to provide job training for our special needs life skills program. The cash register allow them to develop skills that will help them gain employment and become active participants in the local economy.
