Welcome to the Real World: Economy Model in Social Studies

Our students need various sports balls, three inch binders, and TI X-30a Texas Instrument scientific calculators to serve as auction prizes.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Hodson's classroom raised $554

This project is fully funded

Our students learn about the real world as they model it. We have designed our 7th grade social studies classes to operate like businesses because we believe our students are at the perfect age to learn about how our economy works, and their place in it. Many of students that were unmotivated to excel in class have become very interested in the 'real world' aspects of the community we have built. Our school is a true mix of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. While we have students that come from economically stable environments, we also have approximately 50% of our students that receive free or reduced lunch.

Adolescents hear the adults around them talking about things like rent, mortgage, taxes, wages, insurance, investment, savings, and the like. They are extremely curious about how the 'grown up' world operates. Many of them have significant knowledge from life experience about the effects that financial decisions can have on their lives and their happiness. By running our classes as businesses and mini-economies we are able to teach three curricula: basic economic principles, personal finance, and the required 7th grade social studies standards.

Students accumulate money during a quarter by working jobs in the classroom, completing assignments, investing, and demonstrating mastery on assessments. At the end of each quarter the students that have earned an 'A, B, or C' by the methods above are eligible to participate in an auction. The money they use in the auction is proportional to the total they earned in the quarter. We are using this paradigm to help motivate unmotivated students as well as to enrich the curriculum. We need items for the end of the auction that will provide an extra incentive or drive to compete for good grades in the class. Students will be excited and anxious to earn as much money in the class as possible to have a chance at these wonderful items.

With your help we will be able to provide some wonderful tangible incentives for achieving success in our classes. Our students will be extremely excited and grateful to know that others are interested in seeing them succeed.
