My Project

My students are high school juniors who have come to the United States from Haiti, Myanmar, Mexico, and other countries. Many have fled terrible situations, and most work long hours outside of school. None of my students are native English speakers. Together, we work on the reading, writing, and expressive skills my students will need to thrive in the United States. Most have never read an entire novel, cover-to-cover.

Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five is not only written in simple, conversational English, but is also funny –and has deep roots in the city outside our classroom door.

When I taught this novel in Singapore, one of my students was inspired to paint her interpretation of the novel, and this was later displayed at the Vonnegut Library here in Indianapolis.

Now that I have moved back to the States and am facing two classrooms of students who know so little of Indiana and the literature around them, I want to give them Slaughterhouse Five. I have successfully taught this book several times in my 30 year career. The short sections, jokes, and clearly drawn characters make it accessible to high school students of widely different levels I believe my students and I can share Vonnegut's humor and I can teach them a little about the 20th Century and America's role in it —and they can graduate with a sense of pride and accomplishment —and increased literacy —and some cultural capital —and a small paperback book that they can keep and remember the rest of their lives. When I was eighteen, my father gave me his copy of Slaughterhouse Five and I still have it. I would like to pass this wonderful book on to my students.
