Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our campus serves students from 3 years old up to 5th grade. Over 85% of our students are from low-income households. In addition to our robust Dual Language: One Way program, about 50% of our population are English Language Learners and emergent bilinguals.
As their campus librarian, I want to start working to expand their opportunities to interact with current coding technology that encourages creative exploration while reinforcing math and reading skills.
These are resilient children consistently putting their best foot forward with an enthusiasm for learning. Our neighborhood school is supported by our tightly-knitted community. We want to respond to their belief in us by preparing our students for their future as best we can!
My Project
As our students come back to campus, we are aspiring to offer more critical thinking and hands-on experiences. We have begun the process of building an interactive Makerspace and though we have some crafting supplies, we'd like to offer our students more engineering and technology-based opportunities.
With this LEGO equipment, we can show our students what we can achieve when we come together to collaborate, get creative, and build solutions.
With the accompanying lessons, we will incorporate problem-solving, critical thinking, and work on interpersonal skills. Communicating with others to problem solve, how to give and receive positive feedback, and other social-emotional skills will continue to grow as we cultivate a creative learning environment. As half of our campus consists of English Language Learners and emergent bilinguals, these activities will also provide authentic experiences for students to practice their bilingual communication skills with their peers.
