This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a teacher to the perfect combination, of a diverse set, of 23 fourth grade students from a high poverty area in Winston-Salem, NC. Each of my students are faced with adversity daily. My students come from all walks of life. Our school receives ninety-six percent free and reduced lunch due to the socioeconomic makeup of our children. Unfortunately, due to the demographic makeup of our students, we have very little parent support towards classroom supplies which negatively affects our classroom support group.

My Project

What do we usually do when we have to teach fruits and vegetables in English? We use flashcards and illustrations, right? But what if we were to bring a basket full of fruits and not only have students name them, but also take part in a surprise indoor jungle adventure to experience the real life setting of a passage? I can assure you students will be both surprised and thrilled, and even though they may not be in the mood for roasting hot dogs, one thing is certain: this is one lesson they’ll never forget and for this reason I am asking for fake grass, fake trees, and outdoor photo props.
