My Students
My students come from very diverse backgrounds and attend a school that focuses on project-based learning. As such, they are accustomed to working on collaborative projects and taking deep dives into several areas of our curriculum, including literature and art.
My students are at a dynamic age; they inquisitively view the world through lenses that are both curious and magical.
As their teacher, I am constantly exploring new ways to keep them enthusiastically engaged in all that we do. They always bring a lot to the table and never cease to amaze me.
My Project
My students have been enjoying Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book, which won the Newbery Medal in 2009. We just completed part one, and will read part 2 of the book in May.
The Graveyard Book is an example of episodic literature (told in “episodes”, each with their own subplot).
Our literary analysts are examining several story elements within each episode and will continue to do this in the Spring with part 2. They would greatly appreciate more copies of the graphic novel adaptation, which helps them visualize the story, and is accessible for all. We are reading the novel together, but having the graphic novel adaptation to go back to, helps them rediscover the elements that they’ve learned about.
The foam board and tissue paper will be used for an art representation of the graveyard, showing story elements.
