Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are high school students embarking on their first Engineering experience. They are enrolled in an Engineering Essentials course. They will be exploring several aspects of Engineering, Design, and Modeling using CAD in one of the Modules. Our school is a PLTW (Project Lead The Way) school. PLTW is an Activity Project-Based curriculum that will allow my students to explore various STEM career pathways, by working on projects.
Help my Engineering Students see and learn about this career pathway through hands-on projects and explore the vast opportunities STEM careers offer.
Our school is an exceptional, seventh through twelfth grade, public charter school. Our students come to us from all walks of life, those receiving free or reduced-price lunch, those who are English Language Learners, those with special education needs, and those that are considered a part of the gifted student population.
At this time, we are in a totally remote learning environment, but we hope to begin a hybrid model soon. As I am looking for alternatives to keep students engaged in hands-on activities, individual kits seem to be the way to go for now.
My Project
As a female Career Technical Education and Engineering teacher, it has always been my goal to encourage girls to explore STEM careers.
As we continue in a distance learning mode, the IF/THEN Collection will serve as a perfect segue to my Digital Programming module.
I found several inspiring videos of women in STEM, in the IF/THEN Collection. These short, bite-sized video clips embody the essence of my career exploration curriculum. Students will work collaboratively to identify and present the STEM journey some of these successful women have taken. They will then create posters that we will share school-wide, inspiring students school-wide to explore STEM career pathways.
The Circuit Playground Express is a perfect introduction to electronics and programming. It combines a powerful microcontroller with full Code.org CS Discoveries, MakeCode, CircuitPython, and Arduino support. You can program it in any of those languages and it even comes with a collection of useful sensors, inputs, and outputs all built-in! It is a fun and engaging way for students to learn programming, especially in a remote learning environment.
The microcontroller can be connected to various additional sensors and accessories to create innovative projects, showing students how programming digital electronics is actually put to use in the real world.
The additional storage items are to help students organize parts and protect delicate digital parts from damage.
