Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Picture a group of kids who are growing up in homeless, transitional, or semi-permanent housing. That's my room. As one of the few states that guarantee family housing, our shelters are overflowing. The state has purchased temporary apartment housing near our school, and well over half of our population is in our area for a short, undetermined amount of time. With one hundred percent of our student body receiving free breakfast, lunch, and snack, school is their safe place, for many of our student body, it is their safe haven.
Despite obstacles that would be too much for many adults, they remain bright, funny, and fun-loving, and they really enjoy the safety and security that school brings.
Our school not only keeps the kids safe, but it's a place where learning comes alive and is so much fun!
My Project
In 2nd-grade, we try our best to drive home nouns, verbs, adjectives, and other parts of speech that support students reading and writing habits. We learn songs and chants that support our understanding and do our best to build excitement. What we want to do this year is amplify this in excitement and hands-on experience.
We want to BUILD a NOUN TOWN!
What's a noun town, you ask? Picture a long sheet of cobblestone as a blank canvas for 43-second graders. We went to lead them to become the engineers of their own town. They will use paint to paint houses, use clay and paint to mold lawns, trees, and animals, construct lego homes and lincoln log cabins. They will build their own skyscrapers and structures with cardboard and paper mache and have working cards and bicycles.
Perhaps the most important work will be their connection to labeling all the nouns. Students will use the labels to write the name of the common nouns they are using and create a few proper nouns (a replication of our school, our mayor, etc.)
A noun really just names a person, place, thing, or animal; but we can't wait to create an entire town that will be a display for the entire school about the job of nouns in a writing, reading, and speaking.
Any left over materials from our creative art will then be used to ensure we have a Verb Village and an Adjective Avenue in our Noun Town. We dream of bringing the arts into a collaborative grade level project.
