My students need another coffee maker and supplies for our classroom coffee shop in order to make our "Coffee Talk" days FREE for the students and for class to run more efficiently.
I love that my high school seniors and I can still be "kids at heart". I often get asked if I used to teach elementary school because I'm all about the fun things that little kids love.
My students totally by into the bright, fun atmosphere and they love the small things we do like sticker sheets, thematic lessons, student of the day, and chore charts.
We aren't afraid to be silly and that's helps us form our classroom family!
My Project
For the past few years I have introduced every new unit with a wonderful introductory discussion and activity over a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. The students will have just taken a difficult test and it's a day to recharge our mind and soul and get ready to tackle the next unit in math. (These are juniors and seniors in the honors, top levels of mathematics so they work very hard for me.)
Due to the supplies to run the classroom coffee shop, the students, parents, and I are always out of pocket on "Coffee Talk" days, so this project is so important for my students that have had to miss out because of finances.
I have already put several hundred dollars into the supplies and decor to recreate the hit show Friends "Central Perk" coffee shop, but this project would fund it for at least the first semester so that the students wouldn't have to pay for their treats in the shop. Also, this will be the second coffee maker in the room which will make the process run much more quickly and smoothly so that we can get to our learning on these days quicker!
I cannot convey just how beneficial the atmosphere and coffee talk days are for the student's motivation and it is so conductive to them learning the next new thing. They get so excited when they walk in the day after a test because they know the shop will be open. I will continue this tradition with or without the funding, but it would be so nice to not have to ask the students and parents to pay out of pocket to help cover all of these consumables.
