Help me give my students items to help welcome them into a new classroom after a long, difficult summer to help create a sense of comfort and home within the classroom.
As a language arts teacher at a low-income/high poverty Title I urban school with 80% receiving free or reduced-price lunch, I know that my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom that distract from their learning. Hispanic or African American students are approximately 70% of our total school population.
Providing students with high-interest, engaging lessons is vital.
I want to reach students by connecting reading and writing to improve their overall literacy skills.
A welcoming environment is also important. A classroom that is inviting is a place where students will feel comfortable and want to come every day. Providing students with a more personalized classroom is important because this means providing students with a learning place created just for them.
My Project
Starting the 2020-2021 school year will be extremely important for incoming group of sixth graders as they transition from elementary to middle school.
We want to create a welcoming classroom that will help them feel comfortable and at ease during a time that is exciting, especially since they will be coming from a school year that ended on a stressful note.
Providing students with inspirational quotes from Dr. Seuss in framed pictures, posters of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., colorful canvas storage baskets for books, a letter board, new curtains with quotes, and a newly decorated bulletin board with features of the upcoming year will be a sure hit with the students.
An atmosphere for students which is conducive to learning and warm, inviting, and welcoming will provide the fresh start that we all need.
