This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students in the Personalized Pathways Program at our high school earn their credits by completing several projects, tied to both academic and workplace standards, throughout the school year.
Our students are intelligent, funny, and empathetic.
For their first project, they have chosen to build care packages for homeless shelters!
My Project
Help our immigrant students feel welcome through large classroom flags. We have a large population of students from Puerto Rico and Jamaica, and these flags will help our students feel welcome in our classrooms. I've ordered three so each of them can hang in all of the rooms in our small program.
Our students love to express themselves and feel represented.
The flags will help them feel represented, and the whiteboard markers will allow them to express their ideas. We use a holistic model, which means students are also in charge of cleaning! [Thus, the whiteboard cleaner.]
Finally, waxed patty paper is a time-honored geometry tool that helps students understand transformations (reflections, rotations, and translations) in a concrete way before moving onto symbols.
