Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a Title I school in the South Bronx. The students are very diverse; we are a mix of African-American, Latino and some new arrivals from the Middle East and Africa. The school goes from Pre-K to fifth grade and over 95% percent receive free lunch.
The students in my classroom are all special needs students.
I am the IEP teacher for grades 3K-5th. They all have individual educational plans (IEPs). They vary in their needs from learning disabilities to social-emotional needs.
When planning classroom activities and conducting assessments, I keep IEP goals and outcomes in mind. I also keep the IEP in mind to determine how to collect and evaluate student progress toward educational goals.
My Project
This new school year will still look a lot different from any school year a child has seen. My students are all coming back to school. I shudder at the thought of how organized they will be after over a year of working remotely. Their mindset and work habits have to once again shift. With Covid-19, our students still have to go back to school and change their way of learning from remote to in-person.
We are going back full 5 days of live instruction this year after being out with the pandemic.
My students need hand-on engaging activities that help reinforce basic reading and math skills.
The Phonics Flip Books and Word Families Flip Books will be used in centers so that students can independently reinforce fundamental reading skills. The Math Manipulatives toolbox and dice set will be use in small groups to help students with math skills tapping into their visual, auditory and kinetic strengths.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
