My Students

I teach at a public elementary school on the island of Maui in Hawaii. My school is a Title I-funded school with a largely socioeconomically​ disadvantaged student population. Sixty-five percent of our students participate in the free or reduced-price lunch program. We have a population of over 700, highly diverse students with a wide variety of backgrounds, ethnicities, abilities, and individual needs. Students speak multiple languages and 30% of our students are English Language Learners. Students benefiting from my project will range from kindergarten through 5th graders.

My Project

The materials for this project will help create a calm and welcoming environment for the 3rd grade students in the inclusion classroom. The lamps and light covers will be used to illuminate our classroom instead of using the bright fluorescent lights which many students are sensitive to. The rug will be used to create a sense of community in our classroom. It allows our students to gather together for community building activities. The Apple Pencil will be used with our iPad to make the iPad into a mobile whiteboard. This allows me to move around the classroom to interact with students while teaching and allows students to show their work on the iPad as well. Lastly, the bulletin board paper will allow us to create a natural environment that is calming to our students.
