I have 24 AMAZING first-grade students who log on each day for distance learning or come in for hybrid learning. In my class, you will see students of all colors and nationalities and hear them speaking several different languages. Our school serves Title I students as well as many English Learners from all over the world and students with special needs. Our school has several special needs students who mainstream into our rooms, so we truly serve everyone.
My students love to read!
They come to school online every day ready to be inspired and exposed to great stories, new experiences, and new learning. They work hard, play hard, and practice kindness.
We are located in a middle-class neighborhood in the East Bay, but we serve kids from all socioeconomic levels and all cultures. However, no matter what our students have or where they come from, they all deserve a chance to learn and be their best.
My Project
If all goes well, we are set to come back in person in the fall of 2021. Some of my students will have been out of the classroom for well over a year. This has been hard for many students and families who have missed out on a lot of great classroom experiences. I want to be able to welcome them back with a fun, warm classroom theme that will engage them in learning and make it fun to be back.
My happy campers will be excited to learn and play in our own "indoor campsite." I want to make them feel comfortable and excited to be back with a camp theme complete with comfy pillows for sitting and reading on, and the warm glow of a pretend campfire to read by.
The scenery, lights, and pretend plants will help create a fun outdoor environment indoors. The tent and pillows will be a great place in the classroom for them to cuddle up with a good book. First grade is a magical year and after more than a year of being out of school, my students deserve a magical setting in the classroom.
Many of my students have not experienced camping in the outdoors. It will be fun to try to create that experience inside instead. Reading in the indoor tent will be exciting for them as well. Additionally, many of my students may be wary of coming back because of anxieties due to the pandemic. By creating a fun and unique classroom experience, I can make it warm and welcoming for the most nervous students.
I want to make next year the best ever for these kiddos who have been struggling with online learning. I want them to be "Happy Campers."
