This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class has a unique make-up. We have 30 kids in our class. 50% of my class is made up of students who are English Language Learners. Each year our school is required per No Child Left Behind to test our students in math, reading, and science. The past three years, students have met Adequate Yearly Progress in math and reading. However, we continue to struggle in science. Our principal has challenged me to develop lessons which will enrich students' scientific awareness and give them the knowledge to meet AYP.
One idea I have is to give them more active lessons. One unit we will teach this year is weather. The weather unit is easy for students to understand, however, their learning experience could be enriched by using hand-on experiments found inside the Wild Weather Experiment Kits. Using the kits will allow students to better understand how weather effects life on earth. I would like for students to work in pairs with a kit to share and allow them to work in a social situation.
Students who have access to active learning perform better on standardized testing. The kits will also foster a social atmosphere, which is supported with academic learning.
