Weighty Physics Problems Sometimes Result in Tension
My students need weights for many different activities in physics.
This project expired on May 7, 2012.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
A very dynamic way to study forces is to use weights, pulleys and strings to have carts accelerate through photogates as weights fall from their tables. These pulleys will enable us to to do many experiments with various amounts of mass.
Students at this school come from low income, inner city backgrounds.
They have friendly, conscientious attitudes and they work hard to always do their best.
They constantly amaze me with their bright smiles, their eagerness to learn and their ability to overcome adversity.
In physics class, my students perform 8 different lab experiments using falling weights. They strap weights to stings that are passed over pulleys and attached to rolling carts. As the weight falls, the cart is pulled through a set of photogates. Students then can use different weighs to see how it effects acceleration.
Students will also swing the weights to study pendulums, they will hang them from pulleys to learn about mechanical advantage. The weights can be hung from springs in order to find the amount of energy stored in a spring along with Hooke's Law. They can set the spring/weight system into oscillation to find the period and frequency.
These weights will be helpful for numerous experiments and help students have fun, positive experiences as they learn physics.
The best way to learn science is to DO science.
The reason I am asking for weights is that they can be used to make many different experiments possible. Many students doing many different labs with the same equipment means it has tremendous value in the classroom.
