This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a school social worker, I have the privilege of supporting a diverse group of students, many of whom are neurodivergent or have experienced significant trauma. These children often face challenges with emotional regulation and sensory processing, which can affect their ability to learn and thrive in the classroom.

Sensory items are essential tools for helping children manage their emotions, stay focused, and create a sense of calm in overwhelming environments.

We are seeking donations to provide crucial items—weighted blankets, oral sensory tools, weighted stuffed animals, and sensory pads—that will help create a supportive environment where these students can concentrate and engage with their learning.

Our school is located in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco, a vibrant and culturally rich area with the highest density of families in the city. Although the Tenderloin is often recognized for its economic difficulties and the effects of the opioid epidemic, it is also known for its strong sense of community and resilience. Many families in this area face significant challenges, including housing instability and limited access to essential services, which can add stress and impact students' ability to focus and learn. Despite these obstacles, our students exemplify the neighborhood's strength and spirit, demonstrating a remarkable desire to learn and succeed.

Your support will provide the sensory tools needed to create a more calming and supportive learning environment. Weighted blankets and stuffed animals offer deep pressure stimulation to reduce anxiety and improve focus. Chew aids help with oral sensory needs, and sensory pads support self-regulation and concentration. By providing these items, you will help our students stay engaged and succeed in their education.
