My job is to open young minds to scientific thinking in a middle school where students come to school with a variety of challenges. I teach earth science to 13 and 14-year-olds. Many of my kids are visual or hands-on learners who really need to smell, taste, touch and roll in science in order for it to make sense to them!
My kids are really limited in their science background knowledge so I need to provide lab opportunities that give them access to experiences so that they can build a mental framework to hang new learning off of. Turning Earth's crust into a puzzle makes plate tectonics a more meaningful concept to these students. Teaching it from the book without labs will not meet the needs of my students.
Having a set of plate tectonic jigsaw puzzles will give my students the ability to experiment with a concept that is way too large for a classroom. I will be bringing the entire crust of the Earth into our lab and putting it in their hands. They will be able to come to the same conclusions as modern scientists by using the same types of evidence that those scientists used.
Your support will make it possible for my kids to hold the world in their hands (literally) as they learn how plate tectonics has changed the surface of our planet!
