Many of the students that I work with come from extreme poverty and often are lacking in experiences that are needed in order to build background knowledge and vocabulary.
We have a large population of English Speakers of Other Languages.
We also have a high percentage of at risk students; approximately 90% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. Our students work hard every day in order to overcome these disadvantages.
My Project
The students at our school often struggle with vocabulary and being able to read and comprehend in the content areas such as Science and Social Studies. I plan to use Weekly Readers during guided reading. They are written at an appropriate level for each grade and use vocabulary that will challenge our students to learn and use new words. The Weekly Readers will also provide students will valuable background knowledge about a variety of different topics.
I hope that as the students read about topics that they find interesting, they will find other resources to help them continue their own learning.
Your support will assist my students in continuing to feel the excitement of reading to learn!
