My Students

A picture is worth a thousand words, but experiences are priceless. Children need the opportunity to tie important science, social studies, and math concepts and vocabulary to concrete pictures and experiences. In my classroom, we try to do both every day.

Our elementary school is an urban Title 1 school where the vast majority of students receive Free or Reduced Lunch.

What we lack in resources, we make up for in fun! Each year, my approximately 20 energetic and fun first grade students' favorite memories include reading with a partner, math and reading sight word games, singing, freeze dance, science experiments, and a variety of different art and writing projects. How cool that their favorite memories include so much learning! One of the best things about first graders is that they LOVE to LEARN!!!

My Project

This year I am once again requesting a subscription to Scholastic News. This weekly magazine is an excellent way to teach vocabulary and reinforce important social studies and science curriculum. Imagine trying to sound out and read words that you have never heard. The high quality pictures in Scholastic magazines coupled with the online games and videos anchor unknown vocabulary making it easier for beginning readers to learn and experience reading success. In addition, weekly readers help to bridge the gap between classroom learning and home by providing an active way to bring new vocabulary home. And perhaps most importantly, students LOVE them! I use dry-erase boards for sight word practice, spelling, and math problems. They are good for the environment (less paper) and actively engage students. The magnetic money and base ten blocks will allow me to demonstrate important math concepts using the same manipulatives that students use when working independently.

By funding this project, you will help me bring words and abstract ideas to life, develop important social studies, science, and math concepts, provide additional reading practice to early readers, and support the home-school connection for low-income urban students.
