My Students

A picture is worth a thousand words... or so the saying goes. This year I want to give my class the opportunity to tie important science and social studies vocabulary and abstract ideas to concrete pictures and experiences.

I have the best job ever!

I get to spend the school day with approximately 20 energetic and fun first grade students. Our elementary school is an urban Title 1 school where the vast majority of students receive Free or Reduced Lunch. What we lack in resources, we make up for in fun! My class's favorite memories from first grade include reading with a partner, addition, subtraction, and sight word games, singing, freeze dance, science experiments, and a variety of different art projects. I think it is so cool that their favorite memories include so much learning! That is probably the greatest thing about first graders - - - They LOVE to LEARN!!! I get to tap into their natural desire to learn and they in turn fuel my love of teaching.

My Project

We are requesting a subscription to Scholastic News. Imagine trying to sound out and read words that you have never heard. Vocabulary development is critical to first graders' reading success, particularly when it comes to non-fiction topics. Picture this: students engaged in reading high quality non-fiction readers that reinforce important social studies and science curriculum. Better yet, imagine that they get an engaging new colorful reader every week. Now imagine that students can take these resources home and reread them again and again. Weekly readers help to bridge the gap between classroom learning and home by providing an active way to bring new vocabulary home. Every week Scholastic News brings teachers and students high-quality nonfiction on fascinating seasonal science and social studies themes. This engaging first-grade magazine has been specifically designed to help students understand state standards with texts that increase in complexity as the year progresses.

By funding this project, you will help me bring words to life, develop important social studies and science concepts, provide additional reading practice to early readers, and support the home-school connection for low-income urban students.
