Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a low socio-economic neighborhood which means they have limited access to leaning materials at home... and with the current budget crisis in California, a lot of our funding has been cut. My students deserve to have equal access to learning.
I have a classroom of 26 students.
The majority are English Language Learners who receive free or reduced lunch. They come from homes where both parents work. Some are latch key kids or spend a lot of time with babysitters. My students love learning but do not always have access to materials that encourage them to learn at their full capacity. I have a couple students who attend speech class and 2 students who attend our Learning Center for a portion of the day.
My Project
Weekly Readers are a fantastic way to teach kids about current events, holidays, science themes, famous people... while also helping them learn how to read. Each booklet is similar to a 4 page magazine. The students light up when they are given their our personal magazine to read. We read it in class, in partners and in groups. There are several activities that can be done after the children finish reading. What is great is that they can be shared with other classes, and then I let my students take them home. I have heard stories of kids taking them home and reading it to their family members, sharing what they have learned with the rest of the people at home, brothers, sisters or parents.
If you fund this project you will make such a difference in their lives of my students and their families.
Teaching reading can be challenging, but when a child is given something interesting to read, it is the easiest and most rewarding job in the world.
