Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I remember how much fun it was to get a Weekly Reader from my teacher when I was in elementary school. I would love to give that opportunity to my students so that they too can receive the Weekly Reader and Time for Kids.

I teach in an urban Texas district where crime is high and parental involvement is low.

My students come eager to learn. They desire to know what is going on in the world around them, unfortunately many of my students only experience the world outside of their neighborhood through school.

My Project

I am requesting subscriptions to these two magazines because I know that both of these are excellent teaching tools. They are both full of current events. Last year we learned about the earthquake in Haiti and the volcano Iceland as it was going on. We also were able to see what other classes in schools all over the world were like. The pictures specifically in Time for Kids were amazing. We learned about animals all over the world. These magazines will enhance the learning of my students. I will incorporate science, writing, reading and math through the stories. This is not just a social studies tool.

By supporting this project, you will be bringing different cultures, animals and current events into my classroom.

You will be giving them a glimpse of this great big world that lies outside their neighborhood.
