Weekly Reader Non-Fiction Magazine

My students need 2 large packs of pencils and 12 Weekly Reader grade 2 subscriptions, which provide differentiated non-fiction reading materials, to help them meet the needs of the third grade curriculum.

My Students

There is so much going on in the world - but our students can't read about it! The third grade Scholastic News that our school purchases is at too high a level for our students. They need to learn important skills for reading and understanding non-fiction articles.

Our students are largely English Language Learners and Special Needs students.

Many come from immigrant families and live in an urban environment. Most families are unable to help their children with school work due to the demands of their jobs or their own low levels of education. Many of the students are reading at least a year below grade level. Despite their struggles, the students are eager learners with a strong interest in learning about the world around them.

My Project

We are requesting Weekly Reader with Science Spin that is written on a grade 2 level. Our students will use these readers to learn the same skills demanded of them at the third grade level - grasping main idea, summarizing, retelling, and determining importance. The students will be able to access these texts because they will be at their level. Students are extremely curious about the world around them, and being able to access texts about the world will encourage them to read more and improve their reading levels.

These materials are so important to my students because it will enable them to learn grade appropriate skills while they are raising their reading levels to grade standards.

The Weekly Reader will allow the students to access texts on their level about interesting topics. Students will be able to use the texts to learn non-fiction reading skills that will enable them to become better readers and improve their reading levels to catch up to grade standards.
