Weekly Reader: Making Weekly Inquirers

My students need 30 copies of Weekly Reader Grade 2. This is a FANTASTIC weekly magazine filled with current and relevant information for second graders. The opportunity to receive this magazine will allow my students to practice asking questions and finding answers on a weekly basis.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Ekins's classroom raised $136

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Salutations! I am a first year, 2nd grade teacher in a Title I, high poverty school. Despite the challenges faced in this school and it's neighborhood, the students and staff are successful in learning.

Kids are naturally inquisitive. (Really? Why? Are they all? How come? Is there a reason?...you get the point.) Kids NEED to ask questions and learn how to find their own answers. I strive to include science and social studies in our literacy and math packed day. The best way to include the sciences in my day is to have the students READ about science and social studies. The major obstacle we face in my class is that 30 copies of a science text aren't readily available. Therefore, our question asking and information finding opportunities are limited to whole class activities using one shared book.

Weekly Reader is the PERFECT tool for this type of instruction! Each student has a copy to read, the articles inspire inquiry, and the information is interesting! The Weekly Reader is something my students would devour and use for discovery, and in the process, fine tune their reading comprehension skills.

The BEST way to combine the inquiry skills of scientists with keen reading skills is to provide the students with frequent question asking opportunities and the text to find answers to those questions. Weekly Reader will provide my students a weekly source of information my students find relevant and interesting. Weekly Reader is a great resource to use in the classroom to inspire question asking and comprehension techniques...and YOU could help provide that opportunity!
