My school is a "STEM-In-Training" school, but we lack the resources and materials needed to get our students thinking like engineers.
My students attend an inner city, neighborhood school in the third largest school district in the country.
Our neighborhood has the highest murder rate in the city, so generally students are not allowed to go outside during the day.
My student population is 100% African American. All of my students are designated low income and receive free lunch. Over 80% of my students are reading below expected third grade levels. Very few of my students have access to computers outside of school.
My Project
My students will use these Weekly Reader/Scholastic News magazines to learn more about the word around them. Many of my students have not stepped outside of their community and are not aware of whats going on in the world around them. I have been lucky enough to have access to the weekly readers in the past and my students became very excited about the weekly topics. My students wanted to do research on the topics to find out all they could! That is the greatest thing a teacher can see!
My students need to learn more about the world around them.
Reading these magazines, utilizing the awesome online content and learning games, which come with the subscriptions, is something my students have always looked forward to. If I can open up their eyes to more than what they see happening in their community and spark my students curiosity in their world and their future maybe I can help create a future scientist or mathematician.
