Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you were moved to tears upon reading an engaging story in a magazine or newspaper? Knowing that the story and people are real can make it more meaningful to the reader. This experience is what I hope to create with a subscription to Scholastic News.

I work in a Title I school in California where 98% of the families live below the poverty line.

We have a large ELL population here as well. As a special education teacher, I mostly work with students with learning disabilities. Most of my students read well below their grade levels. Many have learned to dread reading, due to the high level of frustration. Even though my students are making significant progress, reading isn't an enjoyable activity for them.

My Project

I am requesting 15 subscriptions to Scholastic News 3rd Grade for my 4th, 5th and 6th grade resource students, and 10 subscriptions to Scholastic News 2nd Grade for my 3rd grade resource students. Scholastic News will help increase my students' literacy and comprehension skills. It will also increase their knowledge of real-world issues. Students will read news stories that focus on social science, science, geography, math and engaging human interest stories as well.

Please help my students continue to develop and grow as readers.

Your generous support will help my students to have access to rich print media, which they can take home and share with their parents and siblings at the end of each week. Scholastic News will be an activity that my students will look forward to each week. I can't wait to watch their enthusiasm as they discover that reading is fun!
