My students need 30 subscriptions of Time For Kids magazines to share at home with their families to facilitate discussions about current events.

My Students
Imagine 30 eight year olds having a weekly discussion about current events with their parents. That is an impressive image. Discussion about current events empower the student as well as the immigrant parents because knowledge brings power.
Immigrant parents and/or any busy, hard working parents find it difficult at times to discuss current events with their children.
The Incredibles are always excited to learn how the outside world connects to our classroom. They love to read non-fiction texts and love to share what they learned. The "Did you know....?" Wall is always full of facts. The Incredibles are intelligent, proud, caring, diverse, and persistent. Despite their limited means and circumstances, they strive to reach their goals and become leaders and heroes. The school that they attend has 96% free and reduced lunch, which means that it is a high-poverty school.
My Project
The magazines will be a part of their weekly homework assignment and they will have to read them with a family member. Then, they will discuss one article in the magazine. Lastly, the student will write a summary of the discussion. The students will learn current events, non-fiction reading, summarizing, writing, listening, comprehensions, and speaking skills. Discussing current events will foster critical thinking skills as well. Moreover, the family member, most likely the parents, will learn as well. Coming from a first generation immigrant family, I know first hand that parents have minimal knowledge of U.S. current events. The students and their family members will benefit from this weekly experience.
This project is very important because it will teach the students many skills such as communication and critical thinking skills.
However, more importantly, this will facilitate a weekly discussion of current events with their family members that will result in empowering the students and family members. The better informed a person is, the better their decisions can be. Let us empower the students and their families.
