I work with Homeless students in six schools. There is an increase in homelessness in VT and my job is to make school successful for homeless students.
These students are the students that truly need help with everyday items people might take for granted.
I work with pre-school students all the way up to 12th grade. I have 32 kids that are experiencing homelessness right now. Students come to school hungry all the time! Many of the students that I work with are not sure when their next meal is going to be.
My Project
Having snacks on hand in my office will allow me to be able to ofter students snack for the weekend. For many of these children, school meals may be the only meals they eat. What happens when they go home over the weekend? When it's Friday afternoon and everyone else is excited some students are counting down the hours until they come back to school where they can get two meals a day. According to the USDA's 2019 Household Food Insecurity in the United States report, more than 37 million people in the United States struggle with hunger. Having snacks available will help students who might not have a stove or microwave to still be able to eat.
