This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students want what we all do--a safe home, good friends, good health, opportunities to learn and grow, and the chance to make a difference in the world. At young ages, many have endured so much already - lives scarred by violence, gangs, or war, leaving the only home they ever knew. They come to me to learn a brand new language and figure out how they can fit in to the world. They are fascinated as I am at the power of science to improve our environment, our health, and quality of life.

My Project

It is incredibly important that I bring real, live science right into my classroom. There is no better way I have found than bringing in live organisms and letting students learn directly from nature. My students love to grow plants, caring for them like their own children. One of the precursors to them growing food in their own hydroponic systems is that we learn about what plants need to thrive. We need aquatic plants and reagents so we can learn under what conditions photosynthesis works best.

Keeping a lab equipped for real science requires consumables that need to be replaced every year.
