This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Do need any help Jackson?" "Do you have recordings we can make?" "Do you need me to edit anything?" "I can borrow some gear from another teacher" "I'll take off work so we can go do interviews this weekend." These are some of the statements that have come from my students over the past year.

My students want to learn, they want to be helpful.

These kids want to learn and do more; they want to gain experience. We are a low socioeconomic school with limited budget support for our non-core subject. We host a podcast in our classroom that brings in guest speakers each week. My students enjoy meeting professionals and learning about the world outside of high school.

My Project

Our students are exposed to more now than when i was in school. I want that exposure to be a positive influence rather than negative. We are gathering equipment to create mobile podcast studios. Webcams that are easy to set up, use and highly portable are are essential when using all the various tools required to produce a recording.

Each podcast we do is an opportunity for students to learn about a topic from an expert in the medical field.

A recent example from the classroom: A medical expert in Rhabdomyolysis spoke with one of our coaches who experienced the condition. We discussed, how and why it happened, the signs and symptoms, the coaches treatment and what to look for in the future.

My goal is to allow my students to have real conversations with the real medical professionals they are interested in becoming.

One of the projects we are planning includes a field trip to a doctor's office which will give access to several medical professionals. With proper planning we can briefly interview the front desk people, the medical assistant, the medical billing experts, the doctor and and nurses all in one trip.
