Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am fortunate to teach in an inclusive early childhood special education program. My class is composed of 3, 4 and 5 year-olds with and without a variety of special needs.
Together we discover that we all have something to contribute and something to learn.
Diversity is a strength. Together we have an opportunity to be more self-aware, more open-minded, and more compassionate.
I strive to have my students' first school experience be positive, engaging, and play-filled. I aim to create a classroom where social emotional skills are emphasized and practiced.
My Project
Last week I taught a lesson on Navajo weavers. My students became very interested weaving. I would like to build on their interest with these weaving incredible materials. Weaving is a fine motor task that encourages creativity in use of color, texture, etc. Weaving is also a mathematical task that can teach symmetry, geometry, patterning, etc. Weaving is a social emotional experience that requires patience, determination, etc. And finally weaving can be a means to build community. Weaving can be a metaphor. Each student contributes something to make up the whole of our class.
